We are all going through transitions, movements and changes in our lives, you, me and the other 7billion plus humans on this planet.  Our lives will always be thus so, as we evolved from change and its in our nature to live through it, surviving life is not enough, thriving is what most people want to experience during this adventure we are on……how did it all start and how can we learn from nature?

Where did the Big Bang come from?

‘Something’ was happening before the ‘Big Bang’ as we know it.  Let’s imagine metaphorically that the ‘something’ was similar to a woman’s experience and a man’s understanding of a ‘pregnancy’ a gestation period.

Lets call it a pre-cosmic pregnancy.

Lets continue to imagine, that this gargantuan pre-cosmic pregnancy was in process in a place called ‘nowhere’ and time as we know it didn’t exist.  How the pre-cosmic pregnancy came about is another blog for another day and it will probably take us to the same place of ‘nowhere and ‘something’ again and again! So lets entertain ourselves here.

We do know or we surmise that the still expanding (some scientists say yes it is and others no it’s not) universe as we have come to understand it was birthed from the ‘something’ in ‘nowhere’  made up of ‘stuff’ that scattering and crashed its way into ‘space’ (as we have come to know it) at a speed and a heat that we cannot imagine, or yet measure and it is still shifting, moving, expanding (maybe), transiting and changing.  It’s constant motion.

Planet Earth that we live on with its thundering iron core spinning in a  sea of liquid iron, the sky above our heads, the moon that pulls on the earth, the trees in the ground, you and I and the mouse in the field all came from that ‘something’ from ‘nowhere’ over billions of years of varying epochs and evolutions of life forms.

Remember Albert Einstein described everything, ‘the stuff’ that came from  that pre-cosmic pregnancy as MATTER.  (And he found that Matter is capable of being converted to energy by the famous formula E = mc2).  Since then scientists have broken down Matter into the tiniest of parts called ‘particles’ and so far we have gotten to what they call ‘quarks’.  (Scientists are endeavouring to find out what happened before the Big Bang in CERN in a giant laboratory between France and Switzerland.

Once we understand and accept that everything around us is Matter and is in constant motion; the planet we live on, all the life forms on it including ourselves are birthing, aging and dying in patterns just like the changing of the seasons and yet no form of life is intrinsically the same.  We are all related to that first ‘source of life’ that birthed us from ‘nowhere’ where ‘something’ extraordinary happened.  It’s as far back as we can go to understand  ‘Who am I and where did I come from’ on our cosmic ‘tree of life’.

Varying cultures around this planet have been inspired by this sense of ‘where we came from’ and have over 200,000 years created rituals, mythologies, religions and belief systems to give meaning to their lives between their first and last breath and beyond for some of them.  It’s the realm of the spirit world.  “We are not human beings on a spiritual journey. We are spiritual beings on a human journey,” according to Pierre Teilhard de Chardin.  What is your sense of this wondrous, curious, painful, mysterious, joyous adventure called your life?

We are connected to that first natural source of what I now personally understand as a powerful supporting energy, which is immensely greater than all of us and all that is in the universe.  You and I are connected to the butterfly that flies past our noses; to the soft snow flake that falls on our heads; to the sea storms that rages on a winter’s night; to the moon’s pull on the seas that create its ebb and flow; to the love we display to your wo/man, child, parent, brother, sister, friend, colleague, dog, cat or cow; to the smile on the postman’s face.  We are all connected.  We are all matter.  Matter matters!  Matter is made of atoms and molecules and they are everywhere; inside us, around us, below us and above us in a natural energetic perpetual dance. Everything and everybody is connected and we take it all for granted.

Whatever your sense is of ‘who I am, where I come from and where I may go’; one thing we can all agree on is that we are always in constant movement, transitioning and changing consciously and unconsciously everyday physically, mentally and spiritually throughout our lives.   Accepting and managing that perpetual motion, not controlling it, is part of our learning curve on this life journey.  We can revisit the memories of our experiences to try to understand ourselves in the ‘now’ of our lives and go forward with our Possible Self each day, listening to it or not, in positive and negative ways and reacting to life with conscious awareness or not.  It’s a choice we make.

We trust that the sun will rise every morning and not ring in to say its sick to-day, we trust that trees will grow leaves in the springtime and not ‘throw a mood’ and sleep for twelve months instead, we trust that the baby in its mothers womb will nine times out of ten naturally grow its nose, fingers and toes.  We expect all of it to happen in sync like a perfectly tuned orchestra everyday. It’s all managed effortlessly and beautifully and all we have to do is turn up each morning to greet and live our possible self for that day as best we can.

We say we trust in nature’s way.  Yet, we misuse and abuse natures resources, its health and each others too.  We worry, we get angry, frustrated, anxious, sad etc in and with our lives.  We distrust ourselves and each other.  We use and abuse each others goodwill, love, kindness and good nature.  We get out of sync so easily with ourselves.  We forget to take a deep breath and try again to be our possible self.  You don’t see the sun having a war with the moon and wanting to take its place day after day.  Nature has its rhythm.  We humans have a lot to learn in living in sync with nature and our own natural rhythm.  When we are in sync we radiate an energy that is infectious, joyous and self-supporting; everything falls into place.  When have you last experienced that sensation, and do you want to experience it everyday?

Taking the time to reflect and understand your own nature, and the experiences that have shaped you into the person that you are, helps you to reset the rhythm of your life.  Who is the authentic you that you want to turn up as each day, that makes you smile no matter what is happening in your life?  Once your intention is on what you want to do, with an attitude of ‘I can do it’ and you get congruent with who you claim to be; your possible self is alive and well.  We live each day between our first and last breath, always in possibility.  Where are you on that time-line in your life and is there a desire to get in sync with who you are?

Due to the huge response to the Irish Times article in the Happiness supplement Saturday February 23rd 2013, we had a very successful inaugural workshop of The Possible Self ‘Me Program’ in Ireland.  The workshop was held in the Radisson Hotel on March 2nd 2013 and we had to turn people away.  We have now scheduled two further workshops for Ireland in May 2013:

1.  One Day Introductory Workshop in the Four Seasons, Simmonscourt Road, Dublin.  May 11th 9.00-18.00.  Maximum of 15 participants.

2.  A Five Day Residential Workshop in the Brooklodge & Spa Hotel in Co Wicklow.  May 12th-17th. Maximum of 12 Participants.

It really got me to focus on who was important in my life and what I was spending my time on, and boy did I get a wake up call, I am in the last third of my life so everything matters that I do now more than ever before.  I know where to put my energy and I know where I get my nurturing from too so that was great……M. The Me Programme workshop was a real wake up call for me.   Having produced and seeing my ‘tree of life’, even after one day on how I got to my present position, I was really taken back by all I have achieved; what I did well and what I made a complete mess of.  I think I am more compassionate towards myself now than before which is a good thing because I was really hard on myself, which was not helping one bit.  I am already making small changes and am working together with another member of the workshop to keep us motivated and on course once a week.  B.M.

I had retired ten months ago and I think I was in shock ‘til now, not knowing what to do with myself and trying to do too much at once.  I am young and still vital in all areas of my life.  Doing my ‘tree of life’ got me to appreciate all I have done and lived through and I rediscovered what I truly love to do and what gives me, and those around me great pleasure.  I assessed my financial situation, I looked at the relationships that really matter to me and by the end of one days workshop I had the shape of a plan I am now implementing.  T.S.

My life was really a bit of a mess when I came to the workshop.  I was not managing any part of my life very well.  As Áínne said sometimes our ship is at sea with no captain, that was me, and there were a few holes letting the water in too.  As I went through the various years of my life on ‘my tree of life’ I gained confidence again from all I have done so far and what I am capable of.  I was once managing and enjoying my life more than I am now and I could see why that was.  I took the time to evaluate what was going wrong and how I was instrumental in creating the situation I was in.  Because I was working in a visual way I could draw a shape of how I wanted my life to be, and what it takes to make it happen.  It’s different than just talking about it.  I am the captain of my ship again and I am working on my finances and not hiding them away in the drawer, I am walking regularly, I am talking to the people who can help me and I am taking it day by day to manage my life in a more self-compassionate way. All that change happened in no more than four weeks.  I have booked the five-day workshop because I need to really get a handle on other parts of my life that I want to bring back to life, you can only do so much in a one day workshop and I need someone to guide me.  H.H.

This workshop was really great, it was practical, creative, enjoyable and most of  all I got a chance to reflect on my life, something I know I wanted to do for a long time.  I discovered that I was hugely appreciative of all that I have in my life and with some thought and action I could improve on the small things, as that is where I get my most pleasure.  I would recommend to everyone to go through The Possible Self process at some stage of your life, as it really gets you to think about your attitudes and what is important to you to live your life to the full.  S.O.N.

The Possible Self ‘Me Programme’ workshops return to Ireland

 The Possible Self Me Programme’ returns to Ireland next month following the success of the inaugural workshop in March 2013.  Two ‘Me Programme’ workshops are scheduled for May – a one day introductory workshop on Saturday the 11 May and a five day residential workshop from Sunday 12 to Friday 17 May.

Neither therapy nor counselling. The Possible Self’s ‘Me Prorgramme’ is an innovative and practical workshop for individuals to explore their life’s and show them the events, people, experiences, behaviours, habits and patterns that have shaped, nourished and guided them to date, good and bad, and sets out the possibilities for their future.

The one-day workshop is an introductory level of the process.  Each person will produce their own personal full size ‘tree of life’ and have a strong sense of where they want to concentrate their attention now and in their future.  The five day workshop goes to a much deeper level of self-knowing, affording the individual more time to produce a detailed personal ‘tree of life’ and a personal working plan for their immediate and long term future.

Who is Áínne Burke?

Áinne Burke is a native of Mayo, studied fine art at GMIT in Galway and NCAD in Dublin: she has exhibited in Ireland and Spain. She has worked with both children and adults for over thirty years nationally and internationaly.  In the 1980s she trained as a producer and director in television and interactive media.  She has directed workshops and created training material for broadcasters in e.g.  Ireland (RTE), Denmark (Danmark Radios), Norway (NRK), Holland (NOB), Sweden (Svergis TV), Canada (CBC) and Britain (BBC).  Among the government and other agencies for which she initiated and facilitated projects were the Arts Council, the Departments of Education in Dublin and Belfast, the Kennedy Center in Washington, the Scarlett Theatre in London, the Office of the President of Ireland, the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) in Vienna. She lives mainly in the south of France.

Life is a journey, an adventure.
An adventure between the first and last breath.
Ours is a human story: an individual perception and sense of self; the people we share it, their personal experiences in exchange with ours and about the planet on which we live.

Living consciously and knowing your own personal story with an awareness of your attitudes, actions, behaviours, habits and patterns facilitates you in making the adventure a more connected, inspiring, colorful, creative and stimulating so that you live life with purpose and meaning.

How are you doing in the twists and turns of life?  If you are considering participating in The Possible Self ‘Me Program’ workshop you might like to know what to expect.

Your co-participants:
There are men and women of various ages from thirty years upwards and from different backgrounds and industries: education, entertainment, media, art, music, home makers, technology, engineering, medical, law, finance, PR and marketing, civil service, corporate business etc.

Some people come because they are in transition: leaving or starting a new job; changing careers; retiring; losing their home, partner or business; starting a new relationship or business; going to live in a different county or country; having a mid-life crisis; children have left the nest; they are floundering from one event to the next; lost or stuck in their life and just can’t find a way to excite themselves about their life.  There are those who are reasonably content with their lives and want to reflect on or evaluate their life to-date and see if there is any part that could do with a good spring-clean, development or change.

The reasons to come to a TPS workshop are many and personal to each person.  One thing they all have in common is that they are very interested in their own lives and how they effect their own well-being, and that of their loved ones around them. All parts of their lives!  They work out how to make the shifts and changes that will give them more purpose, peace, pleasure, personal and emotional security, joy and meaning in their lives.  They get to know how they develop and manage that change through all the ups and downs of life as it continues around them.

There are never more than twelve people in a five-day workshop and up to 15 in a one-day introductory workshop.  The one-day workshop is a mini version of the TPS process and the five day workshop is a residential complete immersion in the process.

The introductory one-day and or the five-day workshop is divided in five parts:
1.    Sensory awareness and development
2.    Knowing your story: the past -your life to-date from birth to now
3.    Owning your story:  the present -the now in your life
4.    Directing your story: the future  -your next chapter/s
5.    Your personal life plan

Workshop structure
In a studio space each person works alone on a long table that represents their life-line in a group of fellow travelers.  Everyone in the group is doing the same work as you are, which creates a sense of camaraderie in the workshop.  You use photographs of yourself that you have brought to the workshop to jog your memory, so that you can chart the various periods to-date.  You photograph your work daily so you have a record of the various stages of progress.

You are facilitated through an innovative process over one-day or five-days to create a visual sense of your years to-date and your next chapter/s on your personal ‘Tree of Life’: the people; events; emotions; places; sensory memories; dreams and imaginings; nature and play experiences.  Everyone in the group is sharing in that process of getting to know their own personal life story.  Sharing common aspects of your story happens at various times during the workshop, formally and informally, which creates an atmosphere of a shared humanity.  A series of exercises are used each day in the development of sensory awareness and expression which helps to create your ‘tree-of-life’ and get you in touch with how you respond to your inner and outer world of memories and everyday experiences.

In a one-day workshop you experience a very short version of that process and in a five-day workshop you have more time to spend on each stage of the process; the past, present and future of your life.

I meander………..
Everyone has ‘stuff’ good and bad that has been woven into the fabric of his or her life.  In a TPS workshop of the ‘Me Programme’ you get to create it, see it and begin to understand how it got woven in that way with those colours, textures and threads as the cloth lengthens.  Life is where it is now.  You can’t change the past. You can learn from your years of past experiences when you know your own story and use it as your own personal library.  Celebrate the experiences because they have taken you to where you are now good and bad, and you are still alive to tell the stories.  You will know what you want in your life and you don’t, once you see your ‘tree of life’ to-date in front of you.  As the weaver of your own destiny, you can now choose the colour and texture of the threads to weave the next part of your fabric of life based on what you have woven to-date; what you have come to know about yourself and what you now want to achieve in your life.

In conclusion you may not change anything about your life and you might do, but the essential part you can achieve is to become aware of and change your own attitudes, thoughts, behaviours, habits, patterns and self-talk that does not support the life you want to live and go after what does. Take the courage to know and start that process and the way you perceive life will change for yourself and those around you.  When individuals make these changes they effect all those around them; the atmosphere, communication and relationships. It all begins and ends with our own self and that self always has the possible self there for us in every minute of our lives.  What is it saying to you?

The Possible Self, TPS is an international company. It designs, facilitates and directs innovative programs and workshops for personal awareness and development.  It’s not therapy or counseling. It’s a creative environment where you are facilitated to reflect on, explore, discover, articulate and express how you got to where you are in your life and how you want to direct, shift and renew it going forward.

The workshops are an opportunity for you to spend focused and concentrated time on your life through a creative process discovering what, who and place inspires you; what works for you and what does not; how do you spend your time and resources everyday, week, month and year; what areas of your life do you want to nurture; what do you like and dislike about yourself; what gives you the greatest pleasure and enjoyment in your life; what skills do you want to develop; how well do you manage your finances, relationships and friendships;  how well do you care for yourself in mind, body and spirit; what habits and behaviors would you like to tweak or change, are you enjoying your life, how do you want to live the rest of your life etc?

Once you see how you have lived your life and what is important to you, you decide on the tweaks and changes you want to make so that your life is more manageable, purposeful, joyous and fulfilling.  Nobody knows you like you do.  You are the author, director and producer of your own life story.  So how well do you know it and how do you want to continue to live it?

There are two main programs:
The ‘Me Program’
The ‘Us Program’

The ‘Me Program’
This TPS program facilitates a group of people or privately on a one to one basis. It can be a one day introductory workshop or a five-day residential workshop. The schedules and locations vary according to demand internationally.

The ‘Us Program’
This TPS program is customized to a groups need: commercial companies, community groups, government bodies, educational organisations, families etc.

There is a maximum of twelve participants in residential workshops and fifteen in group workshops.

In the group ‘Me Program’ each participant works on their own life-story in private, sharing only what is common to the group. Everyone creates and works on their own life-scroll, life-cards, life-board, life-circles, life-maps and finally on their own life-plan. In a private one to one workshop the process is the same with full facilitation on your life. In a group ‘Us Program’  participants use the same process and materials but this time focusing on the group history, project or event.

The programs are creative, intuitive and non technical. They are holistic and very practical and as so; you consider all parts of your life and how they affect the quality and output in and off your life

All life on planet earth is energy.

Every form of life; animal, plant, water, food, the fly on the wall, the snake in the grass, the fuel in your car, you and I and the other 7 billion+ people living on planet earth are interrelated through energy.

I love that magical moment in the morning, when the Sun that was formed some 4.6 billion years ago, peers up over the horizon and radiates its warm golden glow over all of us at different times, on different continents on the same day. It lights up our world.  We depend on it to rise and fall every day, week, month, year and generation after generation.  The Sun powers planet earth that we collectively live on.  Its energy fuels all life.

How do we humans spend the energy we receive from the sun each day to live our lives?   We, all seven billion of us, to a lesser or greater degree, trade, share, use and abuse this natural currency to experience life from birth to death.

We trade our emotional energy every day as a result of the events we experience.  Emotions that make so feel and behave in different ways towards ourselves and those around us:  affection, anger, angst, anguish, annoyance, anxiety, apathy, arousal, awe, boredom, contempt, contentment, courage, curiosity, depression, desire, despair, disappointment, disgust, distrust, dread, ecstasy, embarrassment, envy, euphoria, excitement, fear, frustration, gratitude, grief, guilt, happiness, hatred, hope, horror, hostility, hurt, hysteria, indifference, interest, jealousy, joy, kindness, loathing, loneliness, love, lust, outrage, panic, passion, pity, pleasure, pride, rage, regret, remorse, sadness, satisfaction, shame, shock, shyness, sorrow, suffering, surprise, terror, trust, wonder, worry, zeal and zest.  

We can be as powerful as the sun in our personal and public universe; by the way we radiate and express our emotional energy in the space around us as we wake-up and go about our day.  Emotional energy can make so feel good and/or bad with varying degrees of intensity depending on what is going on in our lives at various times of our lives.  They ebb and flow like a river changing our moods, habits and behaviors.  We are sensory beings.   The emotions we feel drown us and nurture us at times.  They make us feel very alive.  They cast dark shadows across periods of our lives.  They freeze us at times.  They bring hope and wonder.  They spark our creativity and imagination.  They create wars and prejudice.  They create pain and laughter.  They hurt us and cure us.  They drive and deter our ambitions and desires.  They create inertia and apathy.  They make us happy and sad.

We are always an ‘on’ energy ’til the day we die.  So, do we merely react to lives events all of our life or do we manage or control them once we have had enough of a rehearsal of life.

Depending on where and when you were born, the parents, family, friends, the formal education, culture, moral and economic background, country events you experienced in the first quarter of your life, dictates how you will react to life on your own terms in the second quarter of your life.  Will you conform to what you have come to know and live according to their beliefs, behaviors and habits or will you risk a journey of self-discovery that will expand your responses to the world around you?  Where will the journey take you?  Is this stage of life a rehearsal to knowing how you personally experience the world or will this be the course you will take for the rest of your life?  And when you get to three-quarter ways in your life will you assume a cynical attitude as a result of your lives experiences of disappointments or will you still be passionate about the possibilities for change in yourself and the world around you.  Will you always have hope?  Life is no longer a rehearsal, it never was and you did accumulate some experience to know what you like and don’t like, what works for you and does not, what you are passionate about and makes you feel alive.  You have invested time in all you have experienced and time is ticking by.   Whatever stage you are at ask yourself the following questions:

Do I make conscious decisions about my journey?

Did I ever think of life as a journey?

Do I have full awareness of how I am reacting to life?

Do I just react to life on a daily basis with no real plan, vision or goal and let it take me where it will?

Am I aware of how I spend my emotional energy on a daily basis?

Which emotional energy do I feel most days?

How does it make me feel?

How does it affect my body?

Why is that?

How intense is that feeling?

Where is it coming from?

When did I first feel it and how has it intensified over time?

How do I manage it?

Does it manage me?

What can I do about it?

An Exercise from The Possible Self ‘Me Program’

1. Observe your emotional energy for twenty-four hours as tough it was a movie and write your observations.

2. Then dialogue with the observed you and the watched you and see what they have to say to each other.

It’s interesting to know how you ebb and flow each day and get to know yourself better.  Then you can make shifts and changes just like a director does on a movie set.  You get to know what makes you tick!   You become aware and more conscious about life in general.  Your life matters!  It affects all of us.  We are a global human energy that can turn up and down the mood dial at will that can affect our dog, cat, plant, fellow human and maybe even the weather!

Knowing how you are living and feeling your life is the first step in personal awareness and responsibility.  How you feel tells you what is going on for you in your life and you are its director.  Emotional energy is a powerful force.  Like all weather patterns it cannot always be predicted.  Storms, hurricanes, rain, blue skies and sunshine are in constant motion, always shifting.  Our emotional lives are much the same.  The grace is in how we live it and manage it as it ticks by.

By the way I started this blog one year ago, give or take a day.  I stopped drinking coffee and haven’t had a sip since then.  Now, anything is possible.  Hmmmmmmm!
