The Possible Self, TPS, 2015 Dublin City Center  ‘Me Workshop’ begins in February 

The ‘Me Workshop’ is:

– A one-day group workshop February 14th, 8.30am -6pm for a maximum of ten people from any background or stage of life each working on their own visual-map of their life-story.

– A one-day group workshop February 21st, 8.30am -6pm for a maximum of ten business owners/directors, each working on their own visual-map of their company-story.

-Private one to three day workshops for individuals or company owners/directors by appointment.

Neither therapy nor counselling. The Possible Self ‘Me Workshop’ is an innovative and practical way/process for individuals to explore their private-life or their company-story. They explore and discover the events, people, experiences, behaviours, attitudes, habits and patterns that have shaped, nourished and guided them or their company to date, good and bad, and sets out the possibilities for the future.

The one-day workshop is an introductory level of the process. Each person will produce their own personal life-size visual-map of their personal or company -story. They will get a sense of where they are in their life and how they feel about it.  They imagine and articulate where they want to concentrate their attention and resources now and the possibilities for their future.

Company or business owners can attend both days getting to know where they are in their personal-story on day one and doing the same for their company-story on day two.  The process is the same for both. Participants evaluate if their private and business/company lives are in harmony with each other or not and what they could do about it.

It is said that the following are the Dalai Lama’s Rules for Living Your Life.  Whether they are, or not, they certainly get us to consider how we live our life:

1. Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.

2. When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.

3. Follow the three Rs:

a. Respect for self

b. Respect for others

c. Responsibility for all your actions

4. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.

5. Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.

6. Don’t let a little dispute injure a great friendship.

7. When you realize you’ve made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.

8. Spend some time alone every day.

9. Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values.

11. Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you’ll be able to enjoy it a second time.

12. A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.

13. In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don’t bring up the past.

15. Be gentle with the earth.

16. Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.

17. Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.

18. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.

Living life through another culture is an intriguing way of coming to know yourself and the world around you.  Whether it is in Africa, France, Asia, Ireland or Timbuktu. Your life as it is and its possibilities go with you wherever you go. There is no escaping the self or the possible self.  Becoming aware in this way about how you consciously live your life and how the rest of us experience you is a way to transformation should you choose it.

If you have developed any sense of self-awareness about your life to now you will realize who you are being in the new situations.  Very quickly your thought processes, identity, attitudes, behaviours, habits, reactions and actions are challenged.  You awaken from your own cultural comfort zone and perceptions of the world around you as you engage with your new community and culture.  You begin to know who you are being, what, who and where is important to you and how you spend your energy and resources everyday to direct your life in a meaningful and joyous way between birth and death.

The entrenched prejudices, judgements, fears, limitations, attitudes, moods, controlling behaviours, self-obsessions, limiting beliefs all come to the surface when you are challenged in a new environment; in friendships and relationships where ever you go or are.   You are challenged to define who you are and what it is to be a person of honour with integrity, respect, humility, compassion, honesty, humour, imagination, creativity, communication and a loving nature in all that you are and do.  These characteristics are the most difficult for people to uphold as they live this human adventure between birth and death with all its good and bad experiences. We hold each other accountable personally and publicly to at least strive to be that person of character.  To feel and continue to live life with enthusiasm, curiosity, wonderment and possibility for you and those you share the planet with is an amazing sense of humanity when it is activated and lived each day.

It’s interesting in The Possible Self, TPS, workshops how people reflect on their life-story and begin to see how unconsciously they are living their lives.  The idea they had in their mind about their life was very different to the story they discover about themselves.  They see how their present mind-scape limits them at times by applying limitations to their thinking, actions, behaviours, habits and patterns.  It can be their own personal culture, their family culture, and or their country’s culture that have shaped these limitation.  And the total opposite is also discovered in that their culture/s are un-limiting, and the scope for their life is even more than they thought it was.

When they consciously become aware that change is what is always happening in every moment of their life they realize what potential and possibility they have to enjoy and grow their lives in various ways particular to their own situation in life.  They realize the wealth of experiences they have had good and bad that prepares them to exercise any changes they chose to make.  They accept their story of life to now and spend time exploring various options they have to live their life from now on.  They visualize the various options and live through them in an imaginative exercise applying the resources and energy they have to make them happen.  Eventually it comes down to choosing.  We have but one life-time.  We know what we have achieved and experienced to-date.   We know the numbers of years we have left and the various chapters we can live through.  We get to know what we can do with the resources, energy, health, family, friendships and relationships that matter in our lives.

TPS clients fine tune their intentions and plan a way forward that gives them the most joy for the rest of their lives.  They get to know for the first time that no matter what happens in the flow of their life that it is their attitude that brings enjoyment in every moment. An attitude based on the characteristics we mentioned in the previous paragraph.  An attitude with some principles of behaviour that gives meaning to their life.  When they live with this attitude of character they attract the same characters to them no matter where they travel, live, go or are.  It’s an attitude that gets us to step-up and not live half-lives in our very privileged first world.  You may change nothing in your life but your attitude and it seems like that you have gone through a transformation; from being a caterpillar to butterfly.  Seeing the world on the ground and then the air.  You feel lighter, controlling nothing but managing what is important to give purpose and joy to your life.  What you radiate to the world around you is a positive energy that can only do good in all that you do.  And of course you wear one of those amazingly infectious ‘real smiles’

Our life-time in this physical body between our first and last breath is where we stage our life.  The cast of players we join begin with the family we are born into; their cultural, spiritual, creative, social, political, imaginative and financial story inherited from their parents.  We sometimes adapt, change, lose and or expand aspects of that story with time, if we have the personal and or the public freedom to do so.  A continuous inherited clan story of events, people, places and emotions that give us a sense of belonging and place as a child and young adult with its good and bad experiences. Your early life-story frames ‘your perception’ of the world that is ever-changing.

Our stage expands as we individuals expand our horizons. We develop new perceptions and understandings of ourselves and the world around us as we experience new events, people, places and emotions.  We live through all kinds of emotional, political, social, spiritual, creative, imaginative and economic changing weather patterns, surviving at various times and seldom do we thrive in balance in all areas of our life.

Change is constant, in us, around us, in our community, country, continent, planet and universe. No day is the same.  We are not always aware of the changes that are taking place as we try to anchor ourselves long enough to know what is happening and how we might react, adapt or adopt to the change.  Our concept of time drives the chapters of our lives as we age from cradle to grave.  We are not always conscious of the transition from the past minute to the present one and to the one that is to come. Yet the chapters of our lives are only obvious from the chronology of our life-story to-date.

Each day we have the option to perform differently on our world stage, if we are ‘aware’ of who we are being.  Of course this applies to we the very privileged people who write and read blogs who are physically secure in our world; without war, poverty, strive or illness.  We can choose to not waste this life in serving just our own needs and desires. Standing in the other wo/mans shoes and seeing life from her/his perspective motivates us to being in the service of others who are still struggling for food, water, justice, peace, wellness and joy.  Being aware of how we live and share planet earth’s abundance and our effect on its health is also a reflection on how each one of us perform on our own world stage and as a global family on the world stage. Everyone and everything matters. It’s all connected and until we each  learn to become consciously aware and responsible for our own performance each day knowing our heritage, gene pool and  experiences, life will not really change for all our global citizens.

Adapting to change and transitions is an ever-ending process in our private and public life-story, both affecting the other with various levels of great and not so great vibrations and impacts.  Managing our lives through constant change is a balancing act that some are great at, some are mediocre at and some thrive on.  We are a constant work in progress all of our life and there are times we want to reflect and evaluate on how we are doing and how we would like to direct our energies and resources tomorrow and for our future.

We are writing and living our life-story to the day we die. Some of it we write, some of it others write and some of it life writes as we react to life situations as they happen.  Some of us are consciously aware of who was writing our story as it happened, is happening, and some are not.  If you were to read your life-script to-date, whatever age you are, wherever you are and whatever you are doing right now, could you understand and accept the character you are playing on your world stage?

What emotions are you feeling? What is your purpose in life today? Is that purpose serving you or others, or both?  Is it good for you and them?  How empathic, compassionate and loving are you towards yourself and others?  What suggestions would you have for your character based on your experiences to-date? How would you hold yourself in your arms and what words of love would you whisper in your ear to give you the confidence to continue to evolve and blossom in your life? Are you wearing masks to take you through your day?  If so, why?  When are you being your ‘known self’, your ‘authentic self’, your ‘evolved self’? How many selves have you? Which serve you best in your life? Are you confident in how and what you do in your life? Are you mean, economic or generous in how you are spending your precious years?  How many have you left?  How do you want to spend them?

We are what we say, touch, hear, smell, taste and know. We express it each day through our behaviours, patterns, habits and actions in all that we do. How we each perform each day on the world stage effects and affects the energy of the planet and the people who live on it.  We are all connected in all that we say and do producing currents of positive and negative energy fields  between us.  How we each perform each day matters.  How we react to and manage change matters.

If you are going through a transition in your life; finishing college, getting your first job, becoming a parent, children are leaving home,  getting married, getting divorced, the beginning of a new relationship, the end of a relationship, moving in with your lover/partner, separating from your lover/partner, reacquainting yourself with your partner when the children have left the nest, packing up your home and moving elsewhere, bankruptcy, starting a new company, getting a new job, losing a job, retiring, going back to work, recovering from a serious illness, in the best physical shape you have ever been in your life, starting work for an exhibition, after an exhibition, lost a loved one, selling your assets and starting again, re-inventing yourself or don’t know what to think or do next; maybe its time to pause.

The ‘yourself’ he was talking about was the many integrated or not integrated ‘selves’ that we all have?

Do you ever stop to think how people experience ‘you’ on your public stage everyday?

Do you ever stop to think how you experience ‘you’ on your private stage everyday?

How many ‘selves’ do you have in your life story that live your life on your behalf from your birth to now?

What emotion are you demonstrating to-day by your presence, mood, physical and voice expression?  What vibrational energy are you radiating?  Are you conscious of it and how it affects those around you?  Who are you being and are you in harmony with who you believe you are and want to be?

Which self is the one you know best?  Why is that?  When did that self start its performance?  What about the other ‘selves’ that are back stage waiting for their time on the public and private stage?  Do they ever get a chance to perform, take part in your life, or is there a very controlled editorial board in operation? Who are we being in every moment?  How many selves are on stage and who is directing them?  Close your eyes and imagine what is going on in the theater of your own mind right now!

On Saturday I gave an hours presentation on The Possible Self, TPS, to an F1 sports group. After the introductions one participant asked what TPS is?  It’s not a Tony Robbins high energy seminar.  It’s not a Wayne Dyer talk.  It’s not a Louise Hay motivational workshop.  It’s not therapy or  counseling.

The Possible Self workshop facilitates you, who ever you might be, to take time to explore, discover and reflect on your life-story to-date and your possibilities going forward, so that you can live it with a renewed sense of purpose and meaning. You leave with your own life-scroll and an outline plan for your next chapter from a one day workshop and a more detailed plan from a three to five-day workshop.

If you are in transition in your life the workshop will work for you; e.g. becoming a parent or your children have left the nest, you starting a new job or business, retiring, setting up a new chapter of travel and intrigue, moving jobs, lost your job, going back to work, going through a bankruptcy, a breakup of a relationship, getting married, a friend or family member has died, know there is more to you than you have experienced to-date, won the lotto or just want to reflect on where you are at in your life so that you can decide on where to direct your resources for your future.

We are all going through transitions, movements and changes in our lives, you, me and the other 7billion plus humans on this planet.  Our lives will always be thus so, as we evolved from change and its in our nature to live through it, surviving life is not enough, thriving is what most people want to experience during this adventure we are on……how did it all start and how can we learn from nature?

Where did the Big Bang come from?

‘Something’ was happening before the ‘Big Bang’ as we know it.  Let’s imagine metaphorically that the ‘something’ was similar to a woman’s experience and a man’s understanding of a ‘pregnancy’ a gestation period.

Lets call it a pre-cosmic pregnancy.

Lets continue to imagine, that this gargantuan pre-cosmic pregnancy was in process in a place called ‘nowhere’ and time as we know it didn’t exist.  How the pre-cosmic pregnancy came about is another blog for another day and it will probably take us to the same place of ‘nowhere and ‘something’ again and again! So lets entertain ourselves here.

We do know or we surmise that the still expanding (some scientists say yes it is and others no it’s not) universe as we have come to understand it was birthed from the ‘something’ in ‘nowhere’  made up of ‘stuff’ that scattering and crashed its way into ‘space’ (as we have come to know it) at a speed and a heat that we cannot imagine, or yet measure and it is still shifting, moving, expanding (maybe), transiting and changing.  It’s constant motion.

Planet Earth that we live on with its thundering iron core spinning in a  sea of liquid iron, the sky above our heads, the moon that pulls on the earth, the trees in the ground, you and I and the mouse in the field all came from that ‘something’ from ‘nowhere’ over billions of years of varying epochs and evolutions of life forms.

Remember Albert Einstein described everything, ‘the stuff’ that came from  that pre-cosmic pregnancy as MATTER.  (And he found that Matter is capable of being converted to energy by the famous formula E = mc2).  Since then scientists have broken down Matter into the tiniest of parts called ‘particles’ and so far we have gotten to what they call ‘quarks’.  (Scientists are endeavouring to find out what happened before the Big Bang in CERN in a giant laboratory between France and Switzerland.

Once we understand and accept that everything around us is Matter and is in constant motion; the planet we live on, all the life forms on it including ourselves are birthing, aging and dying in patterns just like the changing of the seasons and yet no form of life is intrinsically the same.  We are all related to that first ‘source of life’ that birthed us from ‘nowhere’ where ‘something’ extraordinary happened.  It’s as far back as we can go to understand  ‘Who am I and where did I come from’ on our cosmic ‘tree of life’.

Varying cultures around this planet have been inspired by this sense of ‘where we came from’ and have over 200,000 years created rituals, mythologies, religions and belief systems to give meaning to their lives between their first and last breath and beyond for some of them.  It’s the realm of the spirit world.  “We are not human beings on a spiritual journey. We are spiritual beings on a human journey,” according to Pierre Teilhard de Chardin.  What is your sense of this wondrous, curious, painful, mysterious, joyous adventure called your life?

We are connected to that first natural source of what I now personally understand as a powerful supporting energy, which is immensely greater than all of us and all that is in the universe.  You and I are connected to the butterfly that flies past our noses; to the soft snow flake that falls on our heads; to the sea storms that rages on a winter’s night; to the moon’s pull on the seas that create its ebb and flow; to the love we display to your wo/man, child, parent, brother, sister, friend, colleague, dog, cat or cow; to the smile on the postman’s face.  We are all connected.  We are all matter.  Matter matters!  Matter is made of atoms and molecules and they are everywhere; inside us, around us, below us and above us in a natural energetic perpetual dance. Everything and everybody is connected and we take it all for granted.

Whatever your sense is of ‘who I am, where I come from and where I may go’; one thing we can all agree on is that we are always in constant movement, transitioning and changing consciously and unconsciously everyday physically, mentally and spiritually throughout our lives.   Accepting and managing that perpetual motion, not controlling it, is part of our learning curve on this life journey.  We can revisit the memories of our experiences to try to understand ourselves in the ‘now’ of our lives and go forward with our Possible Self each day, listening to it or not, in positive and negative ways and reacting to life with conscious awareness or not.  It’s a choice we make.

We trust that the sun will rise every morning and not ring in to say its sick to-day, we trust that trees will grow leaves in the springtime and not ‘throw a mood’ and sleep for twelve months instead, we trust that the baby in its mothers womb will nine times out of ten naturally grow its nose, fingers and toes.  We expect all of it to happen in sync like a perfectly tuned orchestra everyday. It’s all managed effortlessly and beautifully and all we have to do is turn up each morning to greet and live our possible self for that day as best we can.

We say we trust in nature’s way.  Yet, we misuse and abuse natures resources, its health and each others too.  We worry, we get angry, frustrated, anxious, sad etc in and with our lives.  We distrust ourselves and each other.  We use and abuse each others goodwill, love, kindness and good nature.  We get out of sync so easily with ourselves.  We forget to take a deep breath and try again to be our possible self.  You don’t see the sun having a war with the moon and wanting to take its place day after day.  Nature has its rhythm.  We humans have a lot to learn in living in sync with nature and our own natural rhythm.  When we are in sync we radiate an energy that is infectious, joyous and self-supporting; everything falls into place.  When have you last experienced that sensation, and do you want to experience it everyday?

Taking the time to reflect and understand your own nature, and the experiences that have shaped you into the person that you are, helps you to reset the rhythm of your life.  Who is the authentic you that you want to turn up as each day, that makes you smile no matter what is happening in your life?  Once your intention is on what you want to do, with an attitude of ‘I can do it’ and you get congruent with who you claim to be; your possible self is alive and well.  We live each day between our first and last breath, always in possibility.  Where are you on that time-line in your life and is there a desire to get in sync with who you are?

‘Time to Reflect’

Due to the huge response to the Irish Times article in the Happiness supplement Saturday February 23rd 2013, we had a very successful inaugural workshop of The Possible Self ‘Me Program’ in Ireland.  The workshop was held in the Radisson Hotel on March 2nd 2013 and we had to turn people away.  We have now scheduled two further workshops for Ireland in May 2013:

1.  One Day Introductory Workshop in the Four Seasons, Simmonscourt Road, Dublin.  May 11th 9.00-18.00.  Maximum of 15 participants.

2.  A Five Day Residential Workshop in the Brooklodge & Spa Hotel in Co Wicklow.  May 12th-17th. Maximum of 12 Participants.

It really got me to focus on who was important in my life and what I was spending my time on, and boy did I get a wake up call, I am in the last third of my life so everything matters that I do now more than ever before.  I know where to put my energy and I know where I get my nurturing from too so that was great……M. The Me Programme workshop was a real wake up call for me.   Having produced and seeing my ‘tree of life’, even after one day on how I got to my present position, I was really taken back by all I have achieved; what I did well and what I made a complete mess of.  I think I am more compassionate towards myself now than before which is a good thing because I was really hard on myself, which was not helping one bit.  I am already making small changes and am working together with another member of the workshop to keep us motivated and on course once a week.  B.M.

I had retired ten months ago and I think I was in shock ‘til now, not knowing what to do with myself and trying to do too much at once.  I am young and still vital in all areas of my life.  Doing my ‘tree of life’ got me to appreciate all I have done and lived through and I rediscovered what I truly love to do and what gives me, and those around me great pleasure.  I assessed my financial situation, I looked at the relationships that really matter to me and by the end of one days workshop I had the shape of a plan I am now implementing.  T.S.

My life was really a bit of a mess when I came to the workshop.  I was not managing any part of my life very well.  As Áínne said sometimes our ship is at sea with no captain, that was me, and there were a few holes letting the water in too.  As I went through the various years of my life on ‘my tree of life’ I gained confidence again from all I have done so far and what I am capable of.  I was once managing and enjoying my life more than I am now and I could see why that was.  I took the time to evaluate what was going wrong and how I was instrumental in creating the situation I was in.  Because I was working in a visual way I could draw a shape of how I wanted my life to be, and what it takes to make it happen.  It’s different than just talking about it.  I am the captain of my ship again and I am working on my finances and not hiding them away in the drawer, I am walking regularly, I am talking to the people who can help me and I am taking it day by day to manage my life in a more self-compassionate way. All that change happened in no more than four weeks.  I have booked the five-day workshop because I need to really get a handle on other parts of my life that I want to bring back to life, you can only do so much in a one day workshop and I need someone to guide me.  H.H.

This workshop was really great, it was practical, creative, enjoyable and most of  all I got a chance to reflect on my life, something I know I wanted to do for a long time.  I discovered that I was hugely appreciative of all that I have in my life and with some thought and action I could improve on the small things, as that is where I get my most pleasure.  I would recommend to everyone to go through The Possible Self process at some stage of your life, as it really gets you to think about your attitudes and what is important to you to live your life to the full.  S.O.N.
